CIRCULATION PLANNING

Early on in the planning stages, circulation issues were noted as a major issue for our study.  Traffic backed-up on the Garden State Parkway, there was inadaqate parking and dangerous intersections where part of the every day experience before they even got to the zoo.  Once inside the gate, no gathering places, confusing pathways,  and no separation between service and visitor trails created a less then optimum experience.

The plan separates resident park circulation from Zoo traffic.  The zoo traffic is directed around to the adaqately sized parking lot and entry plaza where the visitors are present with a single trail that winds its way through 10 themed areas devoted to animals from 4 continents and other thematic zones.   Additional parking is available for busses and Education Center activities.  It is anticipated that the visitors will stay  for 2-4 hours.  A cut-off trail allows those  wishing to shorten their visit without returning the way they came.

The  plan also separates visitor and service traffic.  A totally independent set of pathways allow service vehicles to access the holding buildings and other facilities without encountering visitors.  There are two major service centers on either side of the park providing direct access to major roads for deliveries.
