Zoo Atlanta Redevelopment
    Zoo Atlanta, Atlanta, Georgia

Zoo Atlanta Redevelopment Site Plan

Willie B's first day out

Zoo Atlanta RedevelopmentMaster Plan was completed in 1986 and resulted in the development of a three phase plan funded by  a $17 million city-supported bond and an additional $8 million privately-support capital campaign.  Phase I i(1987) involved the Entry Plaza, flamingo lagoon, Cafe Plaza, main circulation spine and infrastructure, as well as off-exhibit holding, commissary and warehouse projects.
Phase II (1988)  created the "Ford African Rainforest" exhibits representing the West African Forest for Gorillas, Birds and small primates, as well as the "Ketambe Asian Rainforest", home to Orangutans and Sumatran Tiger.  Phase III (1989) , the African Savanna "Masai Mara" exhibits continues the strong landscape theme.  This major exhibit features mixed exhibits for giraffe, zebra, ostrich, antelope and African birds as well as habitats for African Lion, Black Rhino, and African Elephant in a safari-style immersion exhibit exhibit.  Integrated visitor services include a themed "Swahili Market" with thatched restrooms, snack bar with dining terrace overlooking the mixed species habitat, special events Rhino tent and an Elder's tree theater for storytelling, african dancing and drumming.
The "Ford African Rainforest" and "Masai Mara" Exhibits both achieved American Zoological Association "Significant Achievement Awards" in 1988 and1989 respectively and have proven ten years of excellence for breeding and exhibiting endangered species.  Mr. and Mrs. Lash continue to be involved with Zoo Atlanta completing design projects on a yearly basis to continue to enhanse the visitor experience.
