And we are open! Zoo Atlanta's new "African Savanna"……
It's been 6 years in the making - from the first phone call to the last punchlist items - but Zoo Atlanta has opened an Elephant Center that they can be proud of. Over 2 acres of Elephant habitat (2 interconnected yards), a huge, flat giraffe racetrack! and feeding area with zebra and ostrich, and new Warthog and Meerkat areas. The Barn is 20,000 sf and over 30' tall with a traveling bridge crane, sand stalls, lots of glass, and ventilation - exterior paddocks and over 40 12' tall gates that interconnect everywhere with everywhere else. A medical chute with scale, a second floor caregiver administrative area, kitchens, garage for their bobcat to move all that sand around - a huge loading dock, hay storage, filtration center and cleans the 150,000 gallons of water that feeds three different pools and waterfalls….oh, and a VIP overlook/party Hut. Oh and a 60,000 sf Event/Administrative Center overlooking the whole place!

Its a bit anti climatic for me, but the reaction from the public and the staff has been filling the void of weekly meetings and stressing over every little detail and devise. My area was the caging systems, the artificial rock work and pools, the visitor fencing and gates, night lighting, shade structures, small animal enclosures and well - everything really. Thus the end is really the beginning for the zoo. For me it's - I need to find something new!
